Space Age Closets designs and builds custom closets in Toronto and the GTA, and a large share of our work is replacing closets that have quietly fallen behind the way their owners actually live. Closets rarely fail all at once. They just stop keeping up. Here are the clearest signs your closet’s design is due for an update, and the five decisions that shape the new one.
The Signs Your Closet Is Out of Date
Some closets announce themselves: a single sagging rod, one high shelf, wire racks that snag knits and stripe everything below them. Others fail more subtly, clothes migrate to a chair because the closet is full while the top half of it sits empty, shoes pile on the floor, and you dress by memory because you can’t see what you own. If your wardrobe has changed, your family has grown, or you’re working from home and dressing differently than you did when the closet was built, the design is out of date even if the shelves are still standing. A closet should fit the life you have now, and updating it is a far smaller job than most people expect. Once you’ve decided it’s time, these are the five choices that matter.
1. Stock: What the Closet Has to Hold

Every good closet design starts with an honest inventory. Long hanging or short hanging? Drawers, shelves, or a little of both? The right mix depends entirely on what you own, a wardrobe heavy on dresses and coats needs very different proportions than one built on folded knits and jeans. Count your shoes while you’re at it: shoe towers are one of the most requested features we build, and knowing the real number (not the guess) is what makes them work.
2. Layout: How the Space Actually Works

An updated closet has to respect the room it lives in. Circulation comes first. You need room to stand, turn and reach without fighting the cabinetry. Then come the obstacles older designs often ignored: vents, windows, sloped ceilings, door swings. A custom layout works around all of them instead of pretending they aren’t there, which is exactly where off-the-shelf systems tend to fall apart.
3. Lighting: The Upgrade You Feel Every Morning

If your closet still relies on the room’s ceiling fixture, or no light at all, this is the single most noticeable improvement you can make. LED strips in each hanging section, lit shelves, a fixture with some personality overhead: the options today are nearly limitless, and good light means you actually see the colours you’re choosing. Older closets almost never planned for lighting; updated ones treat it as part of the design, not an afterthought.
4. The Island: If You Have the Room

In a larger walk-in, an island is the piece that makes the update feel transformative. Most clients use theirs for jewellery, watches and other finery, kept sorted in shallow drawers where nothing gets buried. The counter, stone, quartz or glass, doubles as a surface for laying out tomorrow’s outfit. It’s the kind of feature found throughout our luxury closets in Toronto, but scaled versions work in more rooms than you’d think.
5. Finish: Where the Design Comes to Life

White is the industry standard for good reason, it’s bright, timeless and makes clothing easy to see. But an update is also the moment to consider something more personal: wood tones, textures, gloss or matte, even a pattern. Then come the details that date a closet faster than anything structural, handles are the jewellery of your closet, and swapping dated hardware onto fresh cabinetry is a finishing touch that costs little and changes everything. Round it out with felt-lined jewellery drawers, cedar lining or decorative mesh door inserts if they suit how you live.

Closet Update Questions, Answered
What are the clearest signs a closet design is outdated?
One rod and one shelf, wire racking, empty space above shoulder height while the floor overflows, and clothes that live on a chair because the closet can’t take them. If any of those sound familiar, the design, not your tidiness, is the problem.
Should I update my closet now or wait for a bigger renovation?
A closet update stands alone. It doesn’t need to wait for a renovation. The work happens inside the existing room, so there’s no reason to live with a closet that isn’t working while a larger project sits years away. If a renovation is genuinely imminent, we simply design the closet to suit the room’s final layout.
Do I need a contractor to update a closet design?
Usually not. A custom closet update is cabinetry work, not construction, the system is built to fit the existing room and installed by our own team, typically without moving walls or plumbing. It’s one of the least disruptive upgrades you can make to a home.
Can I update part of my closet without redoing the whole thing?
You can, better lighting or new hardware alone will change how a closet feels. That said, the layout is where most of the wasted space hides, so if the bones are wrong, a partial refresh polishes a design that still doesn’t fit your wardrobe. We’ll tell you honestly which situation yours is.
Is an updated closet worth it if I might sell my home?
Storage is one of the first things buyers open the door on, and a fitted, well-lit closet shows a home as cared-for in a way empty wire shelving never does. But the better reason is simpler: you get to use it every day between now and whenever you sell.
