Steps To Consider To Make Your Clothes Last Longer

If you’re like myself, you have your favourite pair of jeans and that spiffy top that makes you feel great! And not only that but clothes are expensive so why wouldn’t you want to do whatever you can to maintain them? Here’s some helpful hints!

When you’re hanging your shirts, give them some space. Crowding your clothes together on your closet rod not only creates wrinkling issues (no Oil of Olay won’t help) but it’s difficult to get anything out.

Consider putting your clothes away by colour since that makes it so much easier.

Keep in mind as well, natural fibres such as linen, cotton and wool need room to breathe so don’t cover them up in those cheap dry cleaners bags. For some articles in your closet, consider using cotton bags to keep them dust free and out of the light. As well, consider using shoulder covers for your shirts since they will keep your clothes dust free and reduce fading due to interior light.

In regards to shoe repairs, did you know that perspiration in your shoes causes the leather to dry out and crack? Consider alternating which shoes you wear every other day. Leather also needs care as well. Be sure to wipe them down with good old-fashioned saddle soap. And consider using Neatsfoot oil to keep the leather supple. Always try an inconspicuous spot just in case it affects the finish.

While you’re in a leathery mood, consider doing much the same to your boots, belts and other leather products. They will last longer and won’t dry out and chip.

Boots have a way of going out of shape or simply falling over and creasing. To avoid creasing, consider boot shapers. Not only will they keep your boots upright but you won’t get them going out of shape. Shoe shapers are great for shoes that you don’t wear every day.

One of the worst things to happen to your clothes closet is the infestation of moths. Once you have them, they are difficult to get rid of, moths are easily deterred by aromatic cedar whether in the shape of balls, blocks or preferably, cedar lining the entire closet. Please do not use mothballs! Gasses from the mothballs escape into the air and can cause respiratory problems.

Knitted sweaters and other knits should never be hung on a hanger. Nothing worst than the hangers leaving big humps or the sweater going out of shape completely. Simply fold and store your sweaters horizontally. Consider using acid-free tissue paper to keep the shape of your sweaters if you’re storing them away for the rest of the year. Something new I’ve found as well as breathable storage boxes. Don’t even consider using those horrible plastic storage bins, natural fabrics need to breathe!

We could go on and on…. but this should give you some good storage ideas in the meantime 🙂
